8/12/2023 0 Comments Does roku have chromecast![]() ![]() While both devices have the big two of Netflix and iPlayer, the fact that the Roku has so many more channels overall gives it a clear lead over its rival. Ultimately, there’s only one winner in this category. It’s slick to use and will play just about anything. One of the biggest differentiators between these devices is that Roku provides its own operating system and user interface, whereas Chromecast mirrors apps on the user’s casting device. On Google’s device you’ll need to use the Plex service – which is fine, but a little fiddly – whereas on the Streaming Stick you have access to the Roku Media Player app, among others. Streaming your own content is also easier on Roku than on Chromecast. You do of course also get YouTube, and there’s an excellent selection of films to buy on Google Play Movies. Netflix has one, as has iPlayer, but not much else hopefully more will arrive soon. Rather than have its own apps, Chromecast relies on iOS or Android apps with a ‘Cast’ button. Hopefully we’ll see ITV Player soon, so we can get our fix of Loose Women. We have watched the excellent Sky Now TV though: splash out £6.99 on a month’s Entertainment Pass, immerse yourself in Game Of Thrones and The Walking Dead and you’ll be glad you had it.Īdding apps is a piece of cake and new services join the line-up regularly. Personally we’re quite partial to Visitation, a live stream of services from the Our Lady of the Visitation chuch in Cincinnatti, Ohio. You can turn on the ability to open the Roku remote, play or pause Roku, search Roku, and turn a Roku. There are hundreds more specialist channels, catering for every interest. Open the app on your phone, tap the account icon at the top right, and select Siri Shortcuts. You’ll find more than 500 apps on the Roku store, including the aforementioned BBC iPlayer and Netflix, Sky Store and Now TV, 4oD, Demand 5, Spotify, TuneIn, and YouTube. And here the Roku Streaming Stick has an advantage. ![]() In the end, however, the broader range of computers that can mirror Chrome to your TV means Chromecast takes a slight edge.A media streamer is only ever as good as the media it has to stream. This one’s really close to a tie: Slinging your current browser tab to your TV is a great Chromecast feature being able to use Amazon’s tablets with the Fire TV line is a great addition, and Roku has some interesting stuff in the works, too. The Fire TV Stick works with certain iOS apps and Android devices, as well as with Amazon’s line of tablets. Roku works with certain iOS apps and Android devices and has beta computer and mobile screen mirroring features that are just getting off the ground for Windows 8.1, Windows Phone and Android. Not that Amazon’s and Roku’s interfaces are overly complicated in any way - there’s really no bad interface for this category - there’s just something elegant about the Chromecast’s simplicity.Ĭhromecast works with certain iOS and Android devices and Google’s Chrome web browser on various computers. Size: 6.4 x 2.4 x 0.5 inches (dongle) 4.8 x 1.5 x 0.7 inches (remote) Number of channels: 5,000+. There’s no need to learn a new interface. You use the same apps you always use and, provided they have a Chromecast button, simply tap it to start playback on your TV. I’m going to throw a curve ball here and say that the Chromecast’s utter lack of an interface makes it the best interface. Amazon also packs a better Wi-Fi chip than the Chromecast, though it’s on par with the Roku. Amazon needs more storage because of its emphasis on games and apps that can be loaded onto the Fire TV Stick, though: Storage isn’t really an issue on the other two sticks. The Chromecast has two gigabytes of storage the Roku has 256 megabytes. On paper, the Fire TV Stick handily bests its competitors, with double the processing cores, double the RAM and eight gigabytes of storage. The Fire TV’s $40 game controller works with the Fire TV stick, too. Since the launch of the Fire TV box earlier this year, the company has done a good job porting games over, with the current tally sitting somewhere north of 200. And if there’s not an officially supported channel on Roku, chances are good that there’s an unofficial version that you can manually connect to the device.Īmazon takes the cake here. The Roku Express 4K Plus sets a high bar for features and value, beating out other Rokus like the 50 Streaming Stick 4K, as well affordable streamers like Googles 50 Chromecast with Google. Roku, on the other hand, has been around forever relative to its competitors and supports just about everything. Notable omissions: Amazon’s stick doesn’t support HBO Go and Google’s stick doesn’t support Amazon content. If you’re going for quality over quantity, all three sticks support just about every major streaming service. ![]()
